We are coming together from a variety of organizations and movements to demand that President Biden take immediate action to address the interconnected climate and environmental justice crises we are facing.
Under the first Biden Administration, the President has passed the historic Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) but notably failed to bring his full policy promises to fruition through the Build Back Better Bill. IRA was a good first step for the administration on climate action, but it’s not nearly enough; Biden needs to step up and be the leader on climate that he and the Democratic Party claim to be.
President Biden must go further than “practically” declaring a climate emergency, and use the National Emergencies Act to actually declare one. Once the climate emergency has been declared, Biden must use the executive authorities issued to him under this law to begin a bold and rapid wartime mobilization against climate crisis.
Using the executive powers granted to him, President Biden must transform his Office of Climate Policy into an office of Wartime Mobilization on Climate Crisis. The office should be tasked with assembling a Citizen’s Assembly on Executive Actions to Address the Climate Crisis that the President will be obligated to see through. Issues of priority to the Assembly and the President should include, but not be limited to:
Under the First Biden Administration, the President has approved over 7000 new oil and gas projects, outpacing the Trump administration’s approval of similar projects. President Biden has also broken his promise to stop all oil drilling on federal lands.
Despite Biden’s actions on the first day of office to stop the Keystone XL pipeline, he has now allowed for the Mountain Valley Pipeline in Appalachia, as well as the Willow Project in Alaska, to move forward.
President Biden has a moral obligation to protect and invest in the front-line Black, Indigenous, Brown and Working Class communities that have borne the brunt of fossil fuel production and climate disaster.
